Our visits to the firehall and the police station were interesting and the Amazing Race was a huge success.  The students all had fun while learning lots about their community.  A huge thank you to Mrs. Lindenbach, Mrs. Bockman, Mrs. Paolino, Mrs. Gigliotti, Mrs. Zuccaro, Mrs. Jensen, Mrs. Mandzuk, Mrs. Pearse for  volunteering without their help we would not have been able to go!

Tuesday afternoon will be our class celebration.  Thanks again to Zander, Daniel, Adrien, Eli, and Makayla for supplying all the snacks.  All students can bring a juice box to have during the party.

Just a reminder from the PAC...

These receipts are returned to the store, and the PAC gets gift cards that are used to purchase things like granola bars and juice for various events and needs at the school. Today the public library came to tell us all about their special summer reading club!  It sounds like so much fun and a great way to keep my reading skills over the summer.  They did a funny play about the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs!

Also just to let everyone know the leadership students have  planned that TOMORROW is HAWAIIAN DAY!

Special Visitors to Division 7

This morning Sam's mom and dad came to our class to talk about their careers.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Vamplew are lawyers!  Yesterday we had brainstormed some great questions for them, plus they told us lots of other interesting facts.  Did you know that both Baroc Obama and his wife Michelle are lawyers?  So are Brian Burke and Ken Dryden .   When you go to court as a lawyer you have to wear a wizard or Harry Potter robe aka black robe an English tradition. To become a lawyer it takes 7 years of university plus  a year of articling.

May 29/15

We all had a fantastic day at Grouse Mountain.  The highlights were the gondola ride, seeing the grizzly bears Grinder and Coola, the presentation at the Feasthouse, seeing and feeling real skulls, claws and fur and last but most popular, the lumberjack show! Thanks to all the parents who joined us for the day!

May 22, 2015

This has been a busy but short week! Our scientists this week were Katrina, Aston and Daniel and again they had very cool experiments which they were prepared and knowledgeable about.
In math we continued our multiplication and subtraction stations plus learned about division.  We played parachute games in gym and with our big buddies we are designing and painting Robert Munsch door covers.  This is a huge project but they should look really cool when we get them done.  The Gallery Walk today was really fun.  It is so cool to see all the amazing art that the students of Fairview have done.  Any parents that haven't had a chance to walk the halls to see all the art should definitely try to do so.

Grouse Mountain is next Friday please note that all students (and parent volunteers) need to be at the school by 8 am as the bus needs to leave by 8:15 so that we are at Grouse by 9:30.  Everyone needs to be sure to dress for the weather.  We are all really looking forward to this exciting day!

May 15th

The Poetry Recital on Monday was a big success.  All the students did well and now have  a better idea of what it is like to speak in front of a group.  I learned something too as we had made cue cards for all the students which they didn't really use at all in the classroom but once on stage they just read them :( next time I'll have them put them in their pocket!

I made the draw for our field trip to Grouse Mountain on May 29th and the parents that will be accompanying us on the bus will be Zander's dad, Adrien's mom and Kevin's mom.   Thanks to the other parents who will be joining us for the trip but will be meeting us there.  Please send your $22.40 in as soon as possible so that we can deposit this into the office and then they will write one cheque for the whole Fairview group.

Div. 7 really enjoyed watching some of the track and field events that the intermediate students were in on Thursday.  We had done a mini unit in gym as just an introduction and now most of the students can't wait til they are able to participate.

We started new explorations stations yesterday!

In Math the students have been enjoying new stations which are focusing on subtraction with and without regrouping and multiplication.

Next week Monday is a holiday and Tuesday is a pro d day so there is no school for students. Next Friday is our gallery walk at Fairview.  Parents are welcome to see all the amazing work the students of Fairview have done this year.

May 8th

Just a reminder that the Primary Poetry Recital is on Monday, May 11th at 10:30, all parents are welcome to attend.  Please help your child practice over the weekend to ensure they are ready (the goal is for them to memorize their poem).  We have been working on saying it slowly, loudly and clearly.

Many students are still not registered for our Grouse Mountain field trip please do so as soon as possible.  Also if you registered online but haven't sent in money please also do that.  Thanks.

Our scientists this week have gone very well, thanks to Lachlan, Amalia, Adrien, Quinn and Kevin for being organized and ready to present!  A big thank you to Quinn's cousin who came in to extend Quinn's science project on electrical circuits.  Terry brought in some traffic lights and explained how these work.
Every child should have brought this Scientist sheet home and must bring it completed on their Scientist Day.  I have reminded the students that they should draw a detailed labelled diagram.  If anyone has misplaced their sheets please just let me know.

Happy Mother's Day hope you all have a wonderful day!  The children were very excited about the gift they made for you!  They will need a little adult/older sibling help on Sunday morning. Hope you like it.

Ms. D spent the day with us.  It was so nice to see her again.  She has summer classes and will then be done her teaching program.

Fun Day is coming up on June 12th.  If you are able to volunteer that day please fill out the form that was sent home today and return as soon as possible.

May 1, 2015

Wow, it's hard to believe it is already May!   Today we had a very special guest come to visit us, Pinocchio came to share the mystery of what made his nose grow!  Ask your child what they learned. We were all so curious Mrs. Roberts sent them an email and they agreed to share their secret with us.
I think we all realize now how important it is to ask questions!

Scientist of the day - starts next Monday - hopefully all of you got this handout last week and that your child's date works.  If not please let me know asap.  I have also posted the list of all the dates on our classroom window.  We have not set a specific time each day that we will doing these science projects but if you wanted to be there when your child presents please let me know and we will arrange the time.

Poetry Recital is Monday, May 11th at 10:35 all parents are welcome to attend.  Students should be practicing their poems at home so they can try to memorize it.  Thanks for your help with this.

We went to a special presentation on Wednesday.  Eric Wilson is a Canadian author of many mystery novels.  We all enjoyed this session and learned many good ideas to help us with our own writing.  Div. 7 is excited to read Eric's favourite book Mystery on the Canadian.   Eric Wilson's website  ericwilson.com  has  the first chapter of  all his books if your child is interested in reading any of these and our school library has many of these books available now and will be ordering more.

Grouse Mountain field trip on Friday, May 29th please sign up for this asap

April 24th

Thanks to Marco and Kate's mom for picking up the hot chocolate from Starbucks and Zander's mom for helping to serve it.  All the students were happy to redeem their prize for Club RED reading even though they were disappointed that they couldn't actually go there.  Also thanks to Sam's mom for providing the yummy marshmallows.

Just Right Reading books were changed today.

May 11th is our Primary Poetry Recital so today we started choosing poems so we can start practicing them.  All the grade 2's are partnered up while the grade 3's will be doing one on their own.  They can either choose and recite a poem or write their own poem.  This activity is to prepare our students for public speaking which starts in Grade 4.

We have started an exciting project with our big buddies.  We are designing door covers for Robert Munsch books.  In the next month you should start to see many of these up all over Fairview.

In Math we have continued to work on addition with and without regrouping, reviewing fact families and are now focusing on multiplication.

We started track and field stations in gym and have new stations in both Explorations and Reader's Workshop.

We completed our 'foil art' projects and now they look pretty amazing up in the hall!  You'll have to come by to see them.

Popcorn sales are next Wednesday and Thursday.  They sell for $2.00 a bag.

April 17th

On Tuesday Mrs. Crook came to our class for a second visit. This time we read a very good book about how dream catchers can catch all the bad dreams.   We each got to make our own dream catchers!

Just a reminder to all parents that each week we have a new spelling lesson.  We start on Monday, they write their words in their planners and work on the lesson. They continue each day with the quiz on Friday.  We don't have a lot of in class time to complete these so your child may be bringing it home during the week, if you could please check with your child and assist them to complete this they will be more successful on Friday and learn/master that phonics focus each week.  Spelling City a link on the blog is also a great way for them to practice these words.

A huge thank you to the parents who drove and/or volunteered to attend the ACT with us yesterday.  Pinocchio was an excellent play that we all really enjoyed.

We also started to look closely at different wonders this week.  This week we looked several interesting questions.  Why do you sneeze?  Why do rabbits hop?  How does the sun make energy?

Scholastic book orders were sent home on Thursday and are due next Tuesday, April 22.

Next Friday morning there will be no Family Reading but instead we will be walking to Starbucks to receive our free hot chocolate that we won for our second place finish in Club RED.  We can just use your child's general walking field trip for this outing.  If any parents are able to join us for the walk that would be great!

April 10

Another short but busy week.  We were all very anxious to start new Explorations/Invitations with Ms Roberts class.  The students are excited to be able to go to either classroom and to work with peers from the other class. Ask your child about some of the new things that can explore!

We have now started working more on our community unit. Hopefully your child has told you about their homework. They are each to choose a favourite thing/place in your community to draw and write about, if possible please have this returned to school on Tuesday.  We are looking for any parents that would be able to come into our class to talk about their job/career.  It would give the students a great opportunity to learn from your experiences and about all the different possibilities for when they grow up.

Field trip to the ACT is next Thursday afternoon.  We are still short drivers (we only have spaces for 16 students)  Please remember to send booster seats on Thursday morning.  Thanks.

April 2

Ms Rowledge-Toscani played an April Fool's joke on us by saying we didn't have time for either snack or recess because we had so much work to catch up on!  We all believed her!   Luckily she told us in time to have our snack!  We met our new buddies for our third term and made the cool Easter eggs which we brought home either Wednesday or Thursday!

We have been reading The Hundred Dresses and now realize how important it is to always be kind to each other and not make fun of someone because of how they look, talk or what their name is.

In math we started some new stations, we are focusing on addition with and without regrouping, money. reviewing our subtraction facts and multiplication on the Smart board.

For Art this week we did a directed drawing of a bunny hiding in some grass.  Don't they all look great even though we all followed the same directions everyone is very different and unique! They make our bulletin board in the hall look great.

We changed table groups.  Also be sure to check out our Poetry books as we have a student author plus an Easter word search.

Today Division 7 had lots of treats!   We celebrated both Aston and Adrien's birthdays which are on Sunday plus Mallary brought special cookies for Easter.  Plus we had Booster Juice!   Thanks for the yummy goodies!

Hope you all have a wonderful long Easter weekend!

Thursday was a very busy day with our hundred day celebration and then we all really enjoyed a great play "Hamlin" by Axis Theatre. For 100 day we went to every primary classroom,  ask your child about the variety of different things they did.   Today we did a gallery walk of our 100 day projects with Ms. Roberts class, there were so many very creative ideas!

Please check the portal to sign up for our field trip to the ACT on Thursday, April 16th and if paying by cash please pay as soon as possible.

March 6th

We have had a busy week!

On Monday we did a special bicycle project where we first sketched a bicycle and then we created one out of wire! It was a great final project for our Force and Motion unit!

Tuesday we were very lucky as the Planetarium came to Fairview!  If your child has not mentioned what they saw be sure to ask as they were all very excited and thought it was "AWESOME!"    We learned that:
Thanks to the PAC who paid for this special activity!

Thanks to everyone for attending the conferences to celebrate your child's learning!  The written copy of these reports will be handed out after spring break after Mrs. Kirves has read and signed all of them.

Today we had our Club RED celebration!   There were lots of great prizes and all Club RED members received a special "I LOVE TO READ" bracelet.  Mrs. Cooper was our guest reader and then we had buddy reading and ate red licorice.  Yum!   Great news too our class won 2nd price for Club RED so we won hot chocolate from Starbucks, we will do a walking field trip after the break!

Today your child is bringing home a piece of paper to do a 100 Day Project.   You do not have to use this specific piece of paper if you have something else in mind.  This project can be a poster, sculpture, whatever your child wants to make, as long as it is made with 100 items (examples:  popcorn, cheerios, marshmallows, lego, pennies, stickers etc).  Be creative and have fun!  We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Thursday, March 26th so please send in all projects by Wednesday, March 25th so that I can put them on display.  Thanks so much!
Don't forget to also return your child's Favourite Thing Heart asap so that they can put in their writing to book for them to refer to for ideas.

*We have booked tickets for Divisions 6 and 7 to see 'Pinnochio' at the ACT theater on April 16th (drivers will be needed, notice will be posted after the break.

Hopefully this gorgeous weather will continue and you all have a fun-filled spring break!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a Professional Development Day so there will be no school for the children.

If you haven't already done so please sign up for a conference for next week.  Please remember that your conference will be 30 minutes long - the first 15 minutes with your child and the last 15 minutes with your child and myself.   Just a reminder that Wednesday is an early dismissal (11:40a.m.)  and there is no school on Thursday so that we can conference with all students.

Club RED will be finishing on Saturday so hopefully everyone has read every day in the month of February, each day should be coloured and signed.  Please return the heart to school on Monday or Tuesday.  We will be having our CLUB RED celebration on Friday.  Don't forget to wear RED!

Our Anti-bullying Day assembly was amazing!
Ask your child what they did!  eg) What story was read?  What did they do with a buddy?  What did they get to eat?
Here are some cool pictures of the sea of pink!

We started new Explorations and at the Play Dough station they are to re-represent something they learned in our Force and Motion unit.  These creations turned out amazing so far...
Look Sir Isaac Newton!

Newton's Second Law:
This is Magnetic Repullsion

We also started some new math stations!   The students are most excited to go to THE STORES!  We are learning how to round numbers to the closest ten and the closest hundreds and how this is handy when estimating sums of large numbers.

On Tuesday we had a special guest, Mrs. Crook.  She taught us about Aboriginal People and told us the story "The Messenger of Spring".   We learned that we should not be called Indians.  Ask your child why?  We then made these cool place mats, which we wove and then added different signs of spring.     They look great up on our bulletin board.

Skating was enjoyed by all.   Thanks so much to Marco, Kevin, Jaskirat, Amalia,  Sam, Nolan's  Moms for driving and to all the parents who drove their own child and helped out both on and off the ice.

Could all parents please remind their child that when they go on Raz Kids it is really important that they only ever go on their own accounts.  Thank you.

January 16th

This week we started our Spelling Program - which hopefully you all got the notice about.  Each week the students will do a lesson on the phonics focus for the week, if they do not complete these two pages during class time they will be bringing it home to finish.  I have also added a new link on the front of our blog called Spelling City which is another great way for them to practice their words.
Thanks for your help with this program.

A huge thank you goes out to Sam, Quinn and Eli's mom for helping the students complete a couple of art projects.  We all appreciate their time, patience and work!

This week we started some new Force and Motion stations.  We are experimenting with a variety of different objects to make them move in different ways.   It's amazing to see what some of them come up with!

Thank you to Mallary's grandma for giving Division 7 most of these amazing shells!

Happy New Year!

Hope you all had a fabulous winter break and enjoyed lots of family time.

Division 7 are all starting this new year off on the right foot!  They each made resolutions which you will have to stop by and read.  They are great goals but also look good on the bulletin board.

With the new year 2015 we are focusing on place value in math and are using our base ten blocks.

We started a basketball unit in gym which all the students seem very excited about.

We are using our class Ipad to take pictures look at Slowy's kingdom also know as turtle castle!

During Your Time Kevin brought his new puppy which he got for Christmas.  Her name is Daisy and she is so cute!

We finished colouring our squares during buddies for Fairview's Collaborative Art project.  This bulletin board is in the main hallway going to the gym.  Doesn't it look cool!
